Here's the lowdown for the high performance re-invented venue that is Band on the Wall. This listings is until Halloween. We'll keep you updated with the next month's listings when we get it.

THE UNTHANKS

Formerly Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, their album The Bairns was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Award. Centred around the Unthank sisters, with an expanded line-up including string quartet and percussion, their modern take on traditional folk ballads is both original and stunningly beautiful.

The Manchester Blog Awards celebrate the city’s best independent online writing. Master of the ngoni, Mali’s enigmatic lute-like instrument, Kouyate visits Manchester with his full band on the back of countless awards and plaudits for his 2007 masterpiece Segu Blue. Often described as Africa’s version of the blues, his haunting playing of segu music has thrilled audiences across the world.

JIM MORAY

Jim Moray is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and arranger who performs startlingly contemporary versions of traditional songs. His album, Low Culture, garnered Roots and Mojo album of the year awards. His brilliant interpretations have been described as the most significant development in English folk music since Fairport Convention’s Liege and Leif. Come down and judge for yourself.

EIVIND AARSET

Guitarist Eivind Aarset is one of the most formidably original forces to rise from the Norwegian jazz underground. His album Electronique Noir was hailed as “one of the best post Miles electric jazz albums” by The New York Times. Mixing startling improvisation with breaking rhythms from European club culture, Aarset’s music shoots straight from the hip.

Forged in the late 70s, Nine Below Zero’s raw and gutsy blues has long earned them admiration from a legion of artists including Alexis Korner, Alvin Lee and Eric Clapton. These two special electric and unplugged concerts display both sides of the band that features founding members Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham alongside the rhythm section of Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O’Neill.
