Ancoats gets colourful with the Cutting Room Experiment

Did you enjoy a crazy festival of space hopping and silent discos this weekend

Ancoats gets colourful with the Cutting Room Experiment

Ancoats came alive last weekend for the first time in years when hundreds of people descended on the eastern part of the city for a day of unusually organised events from space hopper racing and musical statues to a world record attempt for the longest conga line.

The atmosphere in the square was great. It was really nice to see so many people of all different ages mixing together and having a good time.

Named the Cutting Room Experiment, the fun day held on Saturday 20 June was organised to mark and celebrate ten years of regeneration in Ancoats including the redevelopment and restoration of Royal Mills, one of the oldest cotton mills in the country and the creation of a number of new homes in the area.

A whole range of people including families, young people and local residents and came together on the day in the heart of Ancoats at the new Cutting Room Square, all taking part in one or more of the 12 user-generated flash-mob style events on offer.

The event was also used to reveal Ancoats’ artist in residence, Dan Dubowitz latest artwork in the form of five large concrete blocks featuring panels with photography from the cutting room in Royal Mill before its refurbishment.

Organised with a difference, the Cutting Room Experiment gave Manchester’s community and internet users from across the country the chance to get creative and put forward their own ideas for events on the day.

More than 100 ideas were generated, under 12 different themes covering a spectrum of interests from architecture and design, film, fun, music and sport - all aiming to bring a collection of people together at one time, in one space, all doing something together.

Members of the public then spent two weeks voting for their favourite ideas, before the winning line-up was announced with more than 1,000 votes taken.

Gemma Lake, 22, was just one of the many visitors who turned up for the day. The BT apprentice had travelled from Newton-le-Willows, near Liverpool to be part of the event.

She said: “When I heard about the Cutting Room Experiment I really wanted to get involved. You don’t often get the opportunity to do something fun like space hopper racing or dancing in a silent disco so I thought I would get some friends together and make the journey.

“The atmosphere in the square was great. It was really nice to see so many people of all different ages mixing together and having a good time.”

Regeneration bodies, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and New East Manchester (NEM) provided funding for the day and events agency Ear To The Ground were appointed to transform the event ideas into a reality with Cahoona creating a totally unique online presence, www.cuttingroomexperiment.com.

Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester, said: “One of the main objectives of the event was to raise the profile of Ancoats and celebrate ten years of regeneration so it was great to see so many people in the square enjoying themselves. Many of those who attended the day had never visited Ancoats before so it was good to be able to offer them such a fun first experience.”

Missed it...I stumbled on this square a month or so back...a pocket (quarter one day?) of Manchester aching to be injected with life and business. Perhaps Little Italy can be resurrected once this ere credit crack has moved on.Boon looks good...any more space hopper pics?

I went along to this, I missed a lot of the day but made it for the space hopper races - gotta say, racing those space hoppers was the most fun I've had in ages, loved it. Great silent disco to finish it all as well.

I absolutely loved the Space Hopper racing! I think we should make it a regular thing in Manchester...
