A model for the future?

Lizzie Miller isn't a lot different to the average sized British woman, yet she has become the hot topic in the US

Published on September 4th 2009.

A model for the future?

The model in question is 20-year-old Lizzie Miller. Having graced a small section within the back pages of the American version of glossy women's magazine Glamour, Lizzie's Pre-Raphaelite appeal has sparked the size debate after she was deemed too fat to even be a plus-sized model.

If you view the enlarged picture, taken from US Glamour, you will see that along with her glowing skin and vibrant smile at 5ft 11inches and 12 and a half stone, Lizzie is also displaying what the modeling industry would regard as unnecessary padding.

The three inch square image has gained more attention than any other industry standard models in Glamour, or any other magazine for that matter. Lizzie Miller's tummy roll also featured on America's morning TV programme Today, which is one of the most-watched shows in the country.

The moment the print issue of the magazine hit newsstands, hoards of women (and a few men) rushed to the magazine’s website to express their delight at seeing a woman they can relate to on the pages of the popular magazine.

Speaking about the public reaction to her photo, Miller said: “It’s sad. In the industry anything over size six (UK size 10) is considered a plus-size. Pretty much every picture in a magazine or ad is airbrushed. I don’t think the public understands how much smoke and mirrors are involved in making women look like that. The fact that this picture caused such a frenzy, it says that this is, obviously, something that people need to see. I’m not trying to promote obesity, and I’m not obese, but I’m also not stick thin.”

US Glamour magazine is now planning a follow-up feature in November's issue which will include more shots of Miller. Let's hope the UK will follow suit.

I hate how high profile fashion magazines and the life think it's perfectly acceptable to fill young women's heads with the notion that having curves is a no-no and you simply have to be stick insect to be accepted! Why the hell don't they realise that curves are legendary and should be embraced not dieted off and forgotten about in the hope that everyone will become a lollipop head in order to "look right". Give me breasts and a curvy ass any day.
