What is The Place?

Is it an Apartment you can rent or is it a Hotel? Gemma was confused and so went to find out.

What is The Place?

Has anyone ever wondered what the hell ‘The Place Apartment Hotel’ round the back of Piccadilly Station is? Well I have, on more than one occasion. Is it an apartment that you rent or is it hotel that you stay in? A few weeks ago I decided to satisfy my curiosity with a quick visit.

This is how The Place bills themselves on their website:

The Place Apartment Hotel Manchester gives you the chance to really enjoy your stay in Manchester city centre with a totally different approach to hotel accommodation. Stay in a luxuriously spacious loft style apartment for the night or longer - not just a hotel bedroom. We'll give you the chance to enjoy more flexibility, more freedom and more choices than traditional 4 Star Manchester city centre hotels.

So basically, it’s like when you book a self-catering holiday, and depending on where in the world you are, the general drill is the same – bedroom, kitchen, bathroom etc. The Place is like this but much, much more luxurious!

You enter through the Superman-esque revolving doors into the pleasant main reception. But it isn’t until you enter the main atrium that you fully appreciate the splendour of the building, which was originally a warehouse used to store cloth brought by canal from mills across the North West and remained in use as a warehouse until the 1960s. It was left vacant for 30 years before being bought and invested in as The Place Apartment Hotel.

Thanks to this bit of history, the interior is stunning with huge cast iron columns acting as a main feature of the hotel and indeed of the apartments themselves. The owners have a clever way of keeping the main atrium cool that suggests a feeling of being outside, even though you are undercover when you enter your apartment. It really feels like you are entering a ‘home’ rather than a hotel bedroom.

Once inside one of the luxury 4 star apartments, I was amazed at the size of it - it was bigger than my whole house put together on one floor! The loft style apartment offered open plan space of excellent quality. The facilities are incredible, with a relaxing lounge and dining area with the open brickwork adding a warm and homely feel to the apartment. Each has a fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, freezer and all the luxuries you would expect. Everything you would need in a kitchen is included from a stylish white dinner set if you decided to entertain friends in the dining area down to a cake tin!

It seemed as though they have thought of everything. There is even a washing machine and dryer with washing tablets included. Not that I’d be doing any washing on my day off obviously, but if I was working away from home for a week, I would greatly appreciate this service as well as the iron, ironing board, kettle, nice teas and a hairdryer!

So confusion over. The Place is a great hotel with much more room than you would normally get in your normal City Centre hotel. You can stay for one night, or as many nights as your heart desires (and they have a really good loyalty card scheme if you want to become a regular).

This really is a great stay for any sort of trip to our wonderful city, whether it be business or pleasure. And if you want to be able to cook yourself some nice dinner of an evening or curl up on the settee watching Sky Movies, listen to a CD or even read one of the many books that are displayed on the book shelves, this is ‘The Place’ for you, if you’ll pardon the pun!
