Reel Deal: The Iron Lady

Reel Deal: The Iron Lady

Average rating:3.5 Star

Here's what the critics are saying...

3/5 stars
By Xan Brooks for Guardian.co.uk

“A breezy, whistle-stop tour through the unstable nitroglycerin of Thatcher's life and times. The tone is jaunty and affectionate, a blend of Yes Minister and The King's Speech, fuelled by flashbacks that bob us back through authorised history.”

3/5 stars
By Katie Stables for Totalfilm.com

“Not Iron Man’s mother, but an adroit if flashy tribute to Mrs Thatcher’s ascent to power. Sly satire and a sublime Streep should tempt in more than the party faithful.”

3/5 stars
By Dan Jolin for Empireonline.com

"One of Streep’s finest-ever performances. But beyond that — whatever Morgan and Lloyd’s intentions — it’s little more than a myth-enshrining exercise."

3/5 stars
By Mark Adams for Mirror.co.uk

“Love or loathe Maggie Thatcher, there is just no getting away from the fact that Meryl Streep delivers an almost spot-on performance as the true blue PM.”

3/5 stars
By Simon Reynolds for Digitalspy.co.uk

“With such a controversial figure at its heart, The Iron Lady plays it awfully safe. Even Thatcher's eventual resignation from office gets short shrift, with a belligerent cabinet meeting rant acting as the catalyst for her downfall. An HBO miniseries may have been the better format in which to explore the subject's life in depth.”

2/5 stars
By Andrew Collins for Radiotimes.com

“Beyond the fun of playing spot the MP – and spot the character actor – it lacks the focus of a comparable political biopic such as The Queen. Without the award-worthy Streep, it's just high quality historical karaoke.”

2/5 stars
By Andy Lea for Dailystar.co.uk

“A little more politics and a lot less dementia and this film could have been worthy of Streep’s massive talent.”

3/5 stars
By Louise Mellor for Denofgeek.com

“The first lot needn’t have worried, because The Iron Lady is no leftist hatchet job, quite the reverse. Lloyd’s film, scripted by Abi Morgan looks fondly upon Maggie, and portrays her variously as a lonely widow, a powerfully charismatic leader, and a driven young woman who triumphs over class boundaries and the patriarchy. Depending on your position on Britain’s first female PM, The Iron Lady is either a glorious vindication, or a nauseating, jingoistic whitewash.”

3/5 stars
By Trevor Johnston for Timeout.co.uk

“The film’s often for, sometimes against, ultimately a bit wishy-washy. Certainly, it’s worth seeing and arguing over, but my personal take on Thatcher remains unchanged, Streep’s virtuoso ministrations notwithstanding.”
