Village Round-Up

Our elf Wayne Clews delves into Christmas and New Year

Published on December 19th 2008.

Village Round-Up

Christmas being a time for families, it’s hardly surprising that most gay people tend to steer clear of heading home for the holidays, to spend an uncomfortable time munching on indigestible stuffing whilst being grilled by Auntie Audrey about when they are going to find a nice girl and settle down.

Fortunately, the Gay Village is there as a handy escape. Whilst Christmas Day activities are a tad limited on Canal Street, you can still enjoy a bit of a goose in the Rembrandt or visit the newly refurbished Manto on Christmas evening. However, Boxing Day being a Friday, and therefore a night when all gay people are required by law to dance badly to dubious music, there is plenty of choice to get you out of the house.

Cruz will be hosting a huge Boxing Day bash with Miss Cara in attendance and Essential will be showcasing another big Bender for the festive season. But the big news for the festive season is the return of Federation, and the massive party they will be holding down at the Ritz.

This is the first of two visits to Manchester as they return again for a huge New Year’s Eve knees-up at the same venue. This usually means there will be lots of fire-eaters and people on stilts milling about the Village to herald their arrival. Essential and Cruz will also be pulling out all the stops for New Year and, for women, Climax is back at Sub 101.

The discerning clubber might fancy Homoelectric down at Charlie’s, an intimate soiree featuring edgy music from some of the best DJs around. If I wasn’t confined to a bath chair and fed through a tube these days, I would certainly be down there embarrassing myself at length.

Homoelectric
Charlie’s, New Year’s Eve, 10am-4pm
For one night only, Jamie Bull takes the helm for a stylish party at Charlie’s. It’s small, but perfectly formed.

Climax
Sub 101, New Year’s Eve, 11pm-late
The lesbian dance party is back with a black and gold theme and tunes from DJ Murray and DJ Furey. Party poppers welcome, but no party poopers.

Federation Boxing Day: Battered & Bruised
The Ritz, Boxing Day, 10pm-4am
The Leeds super-club is back in time for another lavish party and tunes from Nik Denton, Jason Guy, Lee Yeomans and Gregg Holden. Jig away those Christmas calories.

Having read the homophobic comments made on the Tesco debate checked out this section to see what message MC gives about its attitude to being gay/lesbian in Manchester. Not too impressed especially since the first comment made after this article is also homophobic (unless I lost my sense of humour after being described as 'carpet munching horror women' etc.....). I expect more from a website that indicates its wish to represent/inform Manchester as a whole, rather than just the male white heterosexual part of it.

Sorry 'Bum Master' I thought this was a 'what's On' website with the option to exchange views about ''What's On', not an opportunity for people to make oppressive comments. FYI Lesbians are women and proud to be so.

Yeah homoelectric is fun but I am prettttttty sure there is PLENTY more going on this week in the village than the finger buffet on offer in this arseicle!

What the hell is with this section? Is it actually written by a gay person? I usually come on to this site for information on Manchester but find the gay section is treated like a joke. There is nothing really in this section that updates me on the village and i really find it very negative

Not sure why this happened. But the two Out in the Past trails are in the Events section on the Contents.

Dear Anonymous, in answer to your question. Yes he is. Google him.

Fair enough lady but what about the Out in the Past trails this site posted during pride which I and my partner had a great time touring round. Absolutely fascinating. We printed them out and they had much lesbian material on as well. Although I sadly can't find them on the site anymore.
