Who Is This Mystery Man?

Hilton Street Mosaic Mind-Bending Tile Phenomena

Published on October 11th 2011.

Who Is This Mystery Man?

READERS are worried, people are walking round the Northern Quarter with creased brows, I-phones pointlessly punched.

Some folk are sick with worry. Who is this man high in the tiles made from tiles watching people out on the tiles?

Sleuth needs to help these people. Of course he has his usual casting couch on which to soothe the brows of the worried folk of city, especially the more attractive ones, but for once the City Detective has nowhere to turn, his knowledge is flaccid, his soldier's pole has fallen (that's a Shakespearian allusion by the way - look it up).

So who is this man?

Is it simply Mr Hilton?

I live on Hilton Street and I have been asking this question for 18 months. Please find the answer!

Now to me, that looks slightly like a Cllr Karney..

How bizarre. He looks like some guy from the novel 1984 by George Orwell.

George Orwell said Manchester is the belly and guts of the nation. Not a lot of people know that.

Phil 'Tuffers' Tufnell.

It's obvious. His name is under the mosaic. His name is Hilton Street. He was a cold war special agent.

Mark Kennedy would be the man to ask. It's his mosaic and his studio is over the road. http://www.markkennedy.co.uk

Is it definitely one of Mark Kennedy's? Also has the look of the work by (the fantastic) Ed Chapman http://www.edchapman-mosaics.co.uk/

Although I got the shock of my life when I went into the equally fantastic Doops sandwich shop on Peter Street (their steak and caramelised red onion baguettes should receive an honour from the Queen of England) and there was one of Chapman's mosaics... of Maggie Thatcher. Yikes!

Fab artwork, I've noticed this and think it's cool! Whichever street you view it from his eyes are looking at you....it's like the male version of the Mona Lisa!

Jonathan SchofieldOctober 13th 2011.

Nobody knows. This is weird. The story's been looked at by more than two thousand people and still we have no clue.

AnonymousOctober 13th 2011.

Wayne WilliamsOctober 13th 2011.

Is it Michael McIntyre, or Reece Shearsmith off of the League of Gentlemen & Psychoville?

Has anyone looked close enough to see if it's an army uniform he's wearing? It looks a bit kraytwinesk.

Its a picture of an old war veteran.
Its been there 6 weeks. I know because i fitted it!!!!

Jonathan SchofieldOctober 14th 2011.

Thanks. But who. And why? Any details?

AnonymousOctober 14th 2011.

This is so fascinating, I love a mystery! Is it a manchester soldier?

Jack The HatOctober 14th 2011.

Surely its Richard Leese isnt it? Or more likely a young Reggie Kray? And no, before you say it, im not going to make any juvenile and potentially libelous comments about them being one and the same thing. Cllr Leese is a lovely lovely man.

tblzebraOctober 14th 2011.

What I'd like to know is what Kevin Peel thinks he saw in that space in the 16 months and 2 weeks before it was (allegedly) 'fitted' by Nonymous?

SleuthOctober 17th 2011.

AnonymousOctober 20th 2011.
