TOP 10: Theatre & Comedy In February

SISTER | Contact Theatre | Thu 5 - Sat 7 Feb

Amy is a sex worker. Her sister, Rosana, is a shaven-headed lesbian. They are both feminists. In Sister they present a bold and unflinching examination of themselves. Contains full-frontal nudity.

Expect a mix of Noel's unique brand of stand up comedy, live animation, music and some of Fielding's best known TV characters (such as The Moon and Fantasy Man) as he embarks on his UK tour.

SCUTTLERS | Royal Exchange Theatre | Sat 7 Feb - Sat 7 Mar

Based on real court reports, Scuttlers portrays one of Manchester's orginal gangs. Openshaw, Gorton, Salford, Ancoats and Salford were terroised by rival groups of mill workers fighting for control (with their fists, feet, blades and heavy ends of their belts).

Lucy Beaumont has the comedic timing of Les Dawson, so says Johnny Vegas. BBC newcomer award-winner, Beaumont will be showcasing her surreal, offbeat humour from her North-East universe.

SIMON AMSTELL | The Lowry | Sun 15 Feb

Best known for being a pithy presenter on Never Mind The Buzzcocks (and that stint on T4 a long time ago), comedian Simon Amstell is on his fourth international tour To Be Free. With his 'troubling honesty', he'll be exploring freedom, joy, love, death, adventure, art, peace, sex, regret, success, eating, suffering, dreaming, healing, forgiving and other areas.

HINDLE WAKES | Bolton Octagon | Thu 19 Feb - Sun 15 Mar

Following the success of Hobson's Choice, the Octagon presents another famous, great Northern play: Hindle Wakes. It's the end of the Wakes weekend in the fictitious mill town of Hindle in Lancashire, just before the outbreak of the First World War.

THE MIST IN THE MIRROR | Oldham Coliseum | Until Sat 21 Feb

Adapted from the writer of The Woman in Black, this tense and atmospheric new production is an otherworldly mystery that leaves a terrifying eeriness suspended in the air.

THE LION KING | The Palace Theatre | Until Thu 22 Feb

With a cast of over 40 actors, singers & dancers, the story of The Lion King is miraculously brought to life using masks, puppets and striking costumes to tell the story of young Simba's epic adventures as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.

JOHN - DV8 | The Lowry | Thu 26 - Fri 27 Feb

For his new dance-theatre work, Lloyd Newson, Artistic Director of DV8 Physical Theatre, interviewed more than 50 men asking them frank questions initially about love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. JOHN depicts real-life stories with movement and spoken word to create an intense, moving and poignant theatrical experience.

WAITING FOR STANLEY | The Lowry | Sat 28 Feb

Waiting For Stanley is a touching physical comedy, in which suitcases transform into radios, cribs, typewriters and a whole host of other props; clowning and puppetry combine to paint a picture of how life was for London’s women during the war.
