Passing Fancy: CCTV in Chinatown

Occasional piece mooching around Manchester spotting things we find interesting

Published on January 12th 2010.

Passing Fancy: CCTV in Chinatown

David Attenborough in a subdued voice: “Here we have in the urban jungle of Chinatown, Manchester, a once rare, now common breed of orchid indeed: the CCTV gigantica, intrusiva. Displaying its typical yellow petals and thorny stem this dominates the car park at the corner of Nicholas Street and Faulkner Street. It's a truly marvellous multi-foliate and a spectacular example of the plant, a tribute to the people who created the conditions within which it flourishes.”

No seriously, quelle horreur as the French say. The ugly brute seems to primarily be staring at the Chinatown car park entrance and the car park ticket machine. Is this to protect those buying tickets or maybe to make sure the emergency services can be called when people who want to come into Manchester faint at the ludicrous car parking fees?

Mon-Sun £2.70 for 1 hour, £5.40 for 2 hours, £9.80 for 4 hours, £12.80 for 6 hours, £18.10 for a day. Look at that shameful leap, £9.80 for 4 hours: that's a shopping trip into town with maybe a bite too eat. Scandalous. And this next to Manchester Art Gallery and in a leisure and restaurant area. Profiteering anyone?

Twisted Mancon readers strike again. I had no idea that parking charges were so high in certain Manchester car parks because I always come in on public transport. Why the anger? Especially when the article subtitles itself: 'occasional piece mooching around' and is making a point also about hideous street furniture. Keep it up Mancon.

Park somewhere else and walk a bit ?get public transport ? or after 6, just park in any parking bay or any single yellow line

Where's the bitterness? Don't see any

Another pointless, page-filling piece. So the car park in China Town charges the same as the one at Kendals. STOP PRESS!!

Yep, I could. It's a great contribution to a non-story, almost as great as yours

It is, to be fair a bit of a non-story, reflecting the fact it is an ugly but necessary bit of kit in CHinatown's streetscape. Mind you, if it helps move on the street drinkers and tramps who have largely colonised the pagodas and public spaces in the area I'd say it's a necessary evil that the majority of businesses and residents in the area could live with.

Hey anonymous, you could start a car-park tarif comparison web-site with that knowledge like that to hand. Great contribution!

Tip when going to "the" Lowry. Get your ticket stamped at a bar or shop and it is free! BTW, The Woman in black was brilliant!
