Jaguar design secrets revealed at Buy Art Fair

Discover the inspiration behind a modern motoring classic

Jaguar design secrets revealed at Buy Art Fair

As part of this year’s Buy Art Fair art exhibition, two of Jaguar’s senior designers will be talking about the inspiration behind the creation of the new XJ.

Senior Jaguar designers Mark Phillips and Adam Hatton have called their talk ‘The new Jaguar XJ – from vision to reality’ and will show how the Jaguar Design team transformed the design vision into an award-winning car. Jaguar is one of the sponsors of Buy Art Fair, which takes place in Spinningfields, Manchester, between October 28-31.

Their talk will focus on how they gather inspiration from different shapes and designs and how that translates to the finished product.

Ian Callum, design director of Jaguar, said: “Any good car design – indeed the design of anything of value – should tell a story. We took inspiration from classic Jaguars like the Mk2 and original XJ and created a Jaguar for the 21st century with pure, sensual forms.”

Phillips and Hatton worked on the car for four years, from the initial designs right through to the finished product. Both designers come from a fine art and graphic design background before specialising in car design.

Hatton said: “I started off wanting to be an architect and can take inspiration from any form of design.

“For example, parts of the new XJ has taken inspiration from the Riva classic boat design in the way it loops around the occupants at the front. The door bins take design shape from a collection of luggage we liked, and we also took a lot of inspiration from British fashion designers such as Paul Smith and Dunhill.”

Buy Art Fair is also running a competition to win a Jaguar for a week, at www.buyartfair.co.uk/jaguar.
