Martin Amis, one of the UK’s most acclaimed writers, has joined the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester, as Professor of Creative Writing.
He’s also doing some exciting events. This coming Monday he’s debating Writing in the 21st Century. On his own this would be an enticing event, but Amis is being joined by the Man Booker winner John Banville and leading UK author, satirist and wit Will Self.
The debate, like good red meat, should provide protein for the brain. It should also be sparky, spiky and full of fun.
It’s also good to see an unusual venue for the event being used: St Ann’s Church. The three hundred year old building will provide atmosphere and intimacy whilst also being conveniently central for those who don’t work amongst the ivory towers of academia down Oxford Road.
In many ways this is a prologue to Manchester Literature Festival which runs from 4-14 October, more news about that on Manchester Confidential later.
Monday 24 September, 6.30pm, St Ann’s, St Ann’s Square. £3 (or £2 for concessions and University students and staff). 0161 275 8951/boxoffice@manchester.ac.uk
