Piccadilly Gardens wants you in the picture, today

Published on June 11th 2007.

We don’t really have the equivalent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Manchester. There are a few metal panels screwed into the pavement on Oldham Street commemorating Manc bands from the Hollies to Oasis but most people walk straight over them. Populated by cigarette butts, it’s not quite the same as the Californian version.

Today though the Piccadilly Wall – yep the concrete Berlin Wall replica – will be displaying the faces of the North West. It might not sound as glam as Hollywood, but it’s all for a good cause.

The Big Picture – Equal but Different will transform the dull grey concrete into a moving and growing art installation today, Monday 11 June. And your face could and should be part of it. Organisers of Celebr8 (don’t discrimin8) Festival, are asking everyone within the North West to take part by adding their portrait to the artwork to show the beauty and diversity of the people who make up our region.

Christine Burns, head of the North West Equality and Diversity Group, said: “The Big Picture - Equal but Different will bring together different groups of people under one heading, and show how people from different backgrounds and abilities can create something beautiful, in much the same way it does within the North West.”

Bless. Anyone can take part by sending in their portrait which can be a drawing, photo or computer image, or anything else, as long as it is flat and the weight and size of a piece of A4 paper.

Or you can go along and get your image put up there as you stand and watch.

If you’re working in the city this is the perfect vanity lunch break. Get you face in the public eye, contribute to a public artwork and be worthy all at the same time.
