Mick Rock

Last Wednesday, we all hobbed knobbed down to Urbis, for the opening of Rock & Roll Icons – Photography of Mick Rock (29 Sept - Jan 2006). This was definitely the private view of the last few months. There was a real buzz and energy about the place, and the event was kicked off with a speech from the man himself. As you’d expect, he was the consummate rock and roll aficionado, wearing the obligatory sunglasses hiding eyes that could probably tell a thousand stories. Endearing himself to the local faithful, he spoke of the amazing change to Manchester that he had witnessed. I think the word “****hole” was used to describe the city he had experienced back in 1970’s! I’m a little young to know either way but I imagine that he was probably right. Cheers went up as he spoke of his new affection for Manchester. And quite right too!

Described as ‘the man who shot the seventies’ and capturing the personalities of the biggest rock and roll icons over the last 40 years, this exhibition is a credit to Urbis and it’s yet anothersuccess story for the City of Manchester. The fact that Mick Rock chose Manchester rather than London to open his largest exhibition to date is a testament to the growth of the city in the last five years and a reflection that we are increasingly seen as an international destination of choice (well done us!).
