Michelangelo is coming to Manchester

Following the success of their recent Kylie exhibition, Manchester Art Gallery are holding an event on Monday 10 September to attract support for their forthcoming exhibition Art Treasures in Manchester: 150 years on. Mancunian businesses and individuals are being asked to play their role in this historic exhibition, alongside a number of high-profile sponsors.

The original Art Treasures of the United Kingdom was the most impressive art exhibition ever staged. In 1857, it brought 1.3 million visitors to the city over 6 months. With over 16,000 exhibits, it remains a unique Mancunian achievement, and was the city’s first major cultural event. It was funded and organised by a group of Manchester’s great and good, supported by the Mayor and Town Clerk.

To commemorate the exhibition, starting on Saturday 6 October and running until January 2008, Manchester Art Gallery will be staging Art Treasures in Manchester: 150 years on. Drawing on works from the original exhibition that are still in the UK, the show has been three years in the making, and visitors will be able to see pieces by artists such as Michelangelo, Turner and Constable. Designed by Hemisphere, the exhibition space itself will reflect the original exhibition’s layout, as well as examining life in Manchester in 1857.

In the spirit of the original exhibition, and how it was funded in 1857, Manchester Art Gallery are asking businesses and individuals to support the exhibition by becoming Art Treasures Benefactors. In return, Benefactors will receive invitations to the VIP Preview and will be credited in the exhibition, and in a commemorative publication.

The Art Gallery is holding an event for potential Benefactors on Monday 10 September from 5.30-7pm. If you would like to attend this event with a view to becoming a Benefactor, please contact Eleanor Wotherspoon on 07903 729 201 or e.wotherspoon@manchester.gov.uk Alternatively, if you would like to be sent further information about becoming a Benefactor, please contact Eleanor as above.
