The Manchester Contemporary is a new exhibition for emerging and established contemporary artists, showcasing a selected collection of leading UK galleries on one floor of Urbis in Manchester.
Creating a platform for contemporary art in the North, The Manchester Contemporary will showcase some of the most provocative and inspiring art emerging today.
Supported by Contemporary Art Society, Castlefield Gallery and Arts Council England, the work shown in The Manchester Contemporary is selected by an independent panel of curators. Gallery names include Domobaal, Limoncello, WORKS|PROJECTS, Castlefield Gallery, Moot and Ceri Hand Gallery through to Man&Eve, Contemporary Art Society, Nettie Horn, Workplace Gallery, Bureau, Rokeby and The International 3.
At the heart of The Manchester Contemporary will be a specially commissioned work by internationally acclaimed artist, Nathaniel Mellors. Partly a wry response to the sometimes excessive claims for meaning and value that underpin an art fair, Mellors’ new work The Tipp-Ex Block / Play Below Zero is based on a play by the artist which continues the absurdist bent and focus on linguistic manipulation shown in his recent works Giantbum (Tate Triennial, 2009), The Time Surgeon (Biennale de Lyon, 2007), Hateball (Collective Gallery, 2005) and Profondo Viola (Matt’s Gallery, 2004).Kim Rugg
Exhibitors have been selected for their diverse offering that sees different art channels and a mix of established and emerging names come together at The Manchester Contemporary.
The Domobaal (central London), which represents 15 contemporary artists at an international level, will be showing the following artists at this year’s Manchester Contemporary: Marcel Dinahet (video), Video, Felicity Powell (wax relief), Lara Viana (painting) and John Strutton, whose band ‘Arthur Brick’ will perform at the event.Mike Pratt
Man&Eve is an independent gallery that exhibits work covering a range of media, where a changing exhibition programme is complemented by screenings, live performances, artist talks and discussions. Open since 2006, Man&Eve is run by Founder and Director, Lucy Newman Cleeve. As part of The Manchester Contemporary, Man&Eve will be doing a solo show by artist, Ben Long, who has just been shortlisted for ‘Artists Taking The Lead for the North West’.
Nettie Horn exhibits an eclectic variety of contemporary British and international artists and showcases a broad selection of work with emphasis on experimental techniques and material.
Discussing the launch of The Manchester Contemporary, John Dare, Show Director for The Manchester Contemporary, said: “The contemporary art world has been transformational over the past few decades. It seems that the dire economic climate is stimulating art to a certain extent whilst forcing artists to push boundaries and become more avant garde in their work to really stand out.
“The Manchester Contemporary is a collaboration of national and international artists, brought to the North to offer support for artists and gallerists, with sector experts on hand to speak to visitors and help match future owners with their perfect piece of contemporary art.”
Mark Doyle from the Contemporary Art Society, the UK’s leading authority in contemporary art, added: “Creating a platform for contemporary art in the North, The Manchester Contemporary will showcase some of the most provocative and inspiring art emerging today. Prepare to be challenged and forced to think differently as The Manchester Contemporary presents some of the best talent within the contemporary art scene.”
In addition, Buy Art Fair 2009 which runs alongside The Manchester Contemporary at Urbis, will showcase over 350 renowned and highly sought after artists, presented by over 75 carefully selected galleries.
