Watch this space at Piccadilly Gardens

Published on April 7th 2008.

Futuresonic festival sponsored by Piccadilly Partnership is bringing Manchester’s forward-thinking arts and business community together. ThePublicSpace is the product of a creative partnership between three of the most forward-thinking and innovative organisations currently working in Manchester’s arts and business communities. Manchester’s urban festival of art music and ideas Futuresonic, visionary engineering firm Martin Stockley Associates and groundbreaking public-private initiative Piccadilly Partnership have joined together to design, build and house a temporary structure situated in Piccadilly Gardens.

The structure will be a highly visible and accessible focus for the citywide Futuresonic art strand. ThePublicSpace is to be a re-imagining of the existing social space within Piccadilly Gardens, creating an entirely new space for the people of Manchester which will aim to engage, enthuse and spur-on public interaction.

A number of new artworks will be centred around Piccadilly Gardens and will include Rubbing Shoulders from Grennan and Sperandio - the winners of Futuresonic’s major £5000 art prize. Rubbing Shoulders aims to ‘bring the people of Manchester closer together’ and anyone can join to the network by simply wearing a specially designed sticker.

Members of the network will give and receive back rubs as they meet: an antidote to online social networking and the back problems caused by hours hunching over the computer. The city centre will be overrun with ‘unplugged’ social networking as Futuresonic pulls the plug on online social networks such as Facebook and Myspace and asks the people of Manchester to interact in this new and interesting way.

Now in its twelfth year, Futuresonic is back with an unprecedented line-up of live music performances from musical mavericks and risk-takers. There is also the internationally renowned Futuresonic conference: The Social Technologies Summit, where over 500 opinion formers, futurologists, artists and technologist from the digital culture come to exchange and develop ideas and unpick the hype around the latest technological zeitgeist.
