Bluetones star plays Manchester Museum

The stuffed animals at Manchester Museum will be entertained by an acoustic gig starring Bluetone's singer Mark Morriss this Friday night. The event, which is the first indie gig to be held at the Oxford Road museum, will take place in the Animal Life gallery underneath the sperm whale skeleton. The hundred-or-so tickets have already sold out but organiser Christopher Thomas hopes that it will be the first of a regular Museum Sessions night.

Christopher, an employee at the museum, came up with the idea as a way to attract new audiences into the building. Said Christopher, “We have corporate events and events for children and families, but there's not much in the middle. We're right next to the university so we wanted something that would appeal to students.”

The unusual venue was undoubtedly part of the gig's pull: how often do you get to stand next to a group of monkeys and gorillas at a gig? Well, stuffed ones anyway? But the line-up is also very special, topped as it is by Bluetones singer Mark Morriss. Support comes from Manchester singer-songwriter Becca Williams and up-and-coming local act Nomad Jones.

“It's will just be them and their guitars,” says Christopher. “It's going to be an intimate affair, and it's an old building so it's got good acoustics.”

The gig on Friday 10 October is already sold out but Christopher hopes to run another in February. Details will be posted on myspace.
