Black Victorians
It was the week of openings last week and it was the private view on Thursday for Black Victorians (1 Oct - 8 Jan 2006) at The Manchester City Art Gallery. The exhibition gives the first comprehensive overview of black people in British art in the 19th century and includes paintings, sculpture, prints and photography.

Mainly created by white artists, the show examines how white society viewed black people and how social stereotypes were reinforced. There were some really interesting human stories too, such as that of black actor Ira Aldridge, who played Shakespeare’s Othello and toured the country as a celebrated actor. His portraits were truly beautiful and dignified. Most surprising was the story of Victoria Randle, the black goddaughter of Queen Victoria. A really stimulating exhibition.
