Joe Jackson is best remembered as the lone, soulful voice in a brash world of punk. But far from belonging to the cheesy Phil Collins balladeer camp, which was also enjoying chart success at the time, Jackson was a big part of the new wave with his reggae and power pop band. But it is songs like Is She Really Going Out with Him, Steppin' Out and the Jumpin' Jive album that brought him his biggest successes.
In the last few years, the talented piano player has been keeping busy composing and performing. But far from falling back on the past, he won his first Grammy in 2000 for best instrumental album, Symphony No 1, was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Music and is working on a project about Dracula creator Bram Stoker.
Now he is embarking on a piano/bass/drums tour with Graham Maby and Dave Houghton from the original Joe Jackson Band.
It is a long time since Jackson has tinkled the ivories in Liverpool but he does so on Wednesday, May 30, at the Carling Academy when the tour bus rolls into town.
