Win tickets to Guestrant at Electrik

Tim Buca isn't a big name chef, but according to the folks at Electrik, he ought to be. His restaurant, Buca, has no signage and is hidden away on a street in the southern end of Sheffield. You could pass it every day and not notice it, but it is always full. It's one of those instances where a restaurant becomes a word of mouth success while the chef quietly keeps a low profile in the kitchen, doing what he does best.

The Electrik people have eaten there and were very impressed. Buca’s food is simple – no no frills, no gimmicks, no square plates, just extraordinary cooking. From the coastal mountain shacks of Sicily to the stone farmhouses of rural France, Tim takes his inspirations from the frugality of peasant food, and brings it to the city. It is heartfelt, proper food without pretension, delivered by a Yorkshire alchemist.

If you'd like to see what Buca can do yourself, head to Guestrant at Electrik in Chorlton on Monday 19 July. He'll be preparing a three-course meal that will show what all the fuss is about.

Guestrant is a bi-monthly event where a top chef takes over the kitchen at Elecktrik for one night only. It's about trying the new, exciting and different at a social event where you can expect fun and good conversation.

Went to Beluga last night - what a disappointment. First visit there and it was certainly busy - no doubt because of the Mancon offer - so why only 2 seriously overworked (though always pleasant) serving staff??? Unlimited wine was a bit of a joke. First glass and starter was pretty prompt but we then sat there for well over an hour before we managed to attract the waiters attention and get the plates cleared and a second glass of wine which proved to be our last. The Beluga Platter was fine as a starter - good quality ingredients but basically just an assembly job. Mains and desserts?? - have had far better at the local Beefeater. In particular, the cheescake looked as though it had been hastily purchased at some cut price freezer centre and the vanilla icecream seemed to have come from same place. To be fair, this is the only offer that has disappointed but won't be returning to Bleuga any time soon and I can't imagine that Gordo eats there on a regular basis either!!!
