“Sometimes I feel like putting my hands up in the air, I know I can count on you...”Ask a child who sings those lyrics and they'll probably say Florence and the Machine. If they do, educate them immediately on the musical legend that is Candi Staton.
The American southern soul and gospel diva has been thrilling audiences with her raw, heartfelt and incredibly powerful voice for over 50 years and will be performing at Band on the Wall on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 April from 8.30pm.
Candi Staton began her career in the 50s as part of the Jewel Gospel Trio, and is most famous for her 1976 disco hit 'Young Hearts, Run Free'.
She returned to the spotlight in the early 90s as the dance mix of her song 'You Got The Love' thrilled clubland audiences the world over. And of course, in 2009 a version was released again by Florence and the Machine and more recently remixed, with the help of Dizzee Rascal.
We're giving away a pair of tickets to see the woman whose style was famously described as “a voice with a tear in it, the cry of a woman wounded by life, by men, by woes turned inwards.”
The prize also includes a two-course meal at Band on the Wall's Picturehouse cafe bar, which serves freshly-prepared dishes from around the world, such as curry, jambalayaa and mezze. It's open from two hours before the concert starts and you get two courses for a tenner, which sounds like a good deal to us. Click here for more details.
