1984, which is premiering at the Royal Exchange right now, has been getting amazing reviews from critics and audiences. Joan Davis, who reviewed it for Manchester Confidential, was particularly impressed.
She wrote: 'It engages the audience both emotionally and intellectually, tells a human story and asks you to look again at the methods we use to protect our societies from threats, real or imagined. 'If you like theatre that's powerful, that sticks in the mind, take in this superb Royal Exchange event as soon as you can.'
The Royal Exchange describes it as a 'sensual and sinister adaptation'. It tells the story of Winston Smith, whose job is to rewrite history for the Ministry of Truth. When he's handed a note that says simply 'I love you' by a woman he hardly knows, he decides to risk everything in a search for the real truth. It's the classic dystopian novel that tells of one man's battle against a totalitarian state.
