Win these sweet memories

Win these sweet memories

Does summer evoke wistful memories of halcyon days, cycling about on your chopper with Whizzer and Chips in your back pocket? Or maybe you’re transported back to your local sweetshop with pocket money in hand.

Neighbourhoods have changed beyond recognition in the last few decades and that includes the demise of the corner sweetshop. Some can still be found but they are few and far between. The lack of the independent sweet shop is possibly a sign of change in taste but that’s not true for online, old fashioned sweetshop A Quarter Of who send out up to one and a half tonnes of nostalgic sweets a day.

What it comes down to is that we want both convenience and choice, and that is where A Quarter Of’s success comes from.

Five years ago, whilst Michael Parker, creator of A Quarter Of was reminiscing with his brother about childhood sweets, he decided to see whether his favourite, Anglo Bubbly bubblegum was still available. It was, along with many of the old classics such as Space Dust, Flying Saucers, Coltsfoot Rock, Kola Pips and Sports Mixture.

Michael explains: “When I found that all my childhood favourite sweets were still being produced I knew that I wanted to recreate the sweetshop I remembered from being a boy – The Chocolate Box. I wanted to give visitors to the site nostalgic, happy feelings which we have done by photographing every single sweet to give the same visual impact and by designing the site in the style of my favourite childhood comic – Whizzer and Chips. We even enlisted the help of Colin Whittock, who was one of the original Whizzer and Chips cartoonists to illustrate the entire site.

“What began as a bit of fun has boomed. The only factor which explains the phenomena is that Britain cherishes its past. Buying sweets is something that nearly everyone will remember doing as a child and being reminded of those days gives people that warm fuzzy feeling of familiarity and going home.”

A Quarter Of is also investing into memories with the site’s forum ‘Whatever Happened To’. It reveals quirky anecdotes of how as a child you would buy a quarter of your favourite sweets in a white paper bag, carry them around in your blazer pocket for a week and maybe trade one for a conker or two.

A new section ‘The Decade Pages’ will be added later this summer, which will act as a memory bank of recollections from the 50s, 60s and 70s. ‘The Decade Pages’ will feature quotes from individuals musing over life back then; from food to television and comics and should be welcomed by those trying to hold onto memories of bygone times.

A Quarter Of is the gateway to around 600 sweets, so for a trip down memory lane without resorting to digging out your old chopper go to www.AQuarterOf.co.uk

Manchester Confidential are offering the chance to win a large handmade Wooden Box of Nostalgia, weighing a whopping 3.1 kg full of all the old favourites like drumsticks, flying saucers and fried eggs.
