Win dinner at San Carlo with Gordo

We love pizza and pasta but having it every time you eat at an Italian restaurant is the dining equivalent of going on holiday to the same place year after year. It's pleasant and safe but you're never going to be surprised, or amazed, or fall in love with something new.

The chefs and owners at San Carlo feel the same. They've got a whole world of fantastic Italian dishes in their repertoire that they're proud of, but more often than not, the order slips feature the same old choices: carbonara, margherita, minestrone...

So they sat down with Gordo to choose a selection of dishes that brings out the hidden gems in the extensive San Carlo menu. The Confidential Menu at San Carlo showcases fabulous food that you would never find in one of those red, white and green high street Italians. Many of these dishes are firm favourites with San Carlo’s legion of regular Italian diners but rarely ordered by the rest of us locals.

Starters to tempt you out of your comfort zone include tuna carpaccio – super fresh thinly sliced yellow fin tuna in a citrus marinade with braised fennel, and mozzarella in deep fried bread with garlic and anchovy sauce – a deceptively light treat with brilliantly balanced saucing. Gordo reckons he could eat three of these at one sitting.

The mains will fire your curiosity as well. There's Roman dish saltimbocca (sliced veal with ham, cooked in white wine and sage) which according to El Gordo is, 'seriously very, very addictive’. And abbachio alla Romano – a very, very tasty dish of Welsh lamb cutlets, pan fried with garlic and rosemary – the sauce is the culinary equivalent of a summer stroll through the Italian countryside. Not to mention the tagliolini lobster, if you want to try a true delicacy.

You'll see a few familiar names in the dessert menu – pana cotta and tiramisu – but you won't have seen them prepared to this standard before. The cannolo will be another winner – home made and stuffed with ricotta cheese, candied fruit, chocolate chips and Gran Marnier.

Be adventurous – give these dishes a go. It'll keep the chefs on their toes and show Manchester restaurants that the punters are keen to try new things.
