Win a modeling competition

So you fancy yourself as a bit of a looker? Harper and Quinn Hairdressers in conjunction with the Kevin Murphy range are running a fab modeling competition.

Win a modeling competition

A trip to the hairdressers usually entails a cut and blow dry, with the odd highlight painted in just to cheer things up a bit. And unless we’re having a huge identity crisis, grab the shears and do a Britney, we can pretty much predict what the finished look will be.

So high time we re-wrote the hairdressers handbook, don’cha think? That’s exactly what Harper and Quinn Hairdressers did when they invited Australian stylist to the stars, Kevin Murphy over to their award-winning Wilmslow salon.

Known for creating red carpet looks for the likes of Cate Blanchett, Selma Blair, Naomi Watts and Kylie Minogue, Kevin popped in to teach the Harper and Quinn clan how to achieve glamour from the salon floor using the Kevin Murphy range.

The main object of the session wasn’t just for Kevin to showpony his talents (although he did, quite captivatingly so). It’s so stylists at Harper and Quinn can import their skills, knowledge and creativity onto the client using some rather kooky ideas like sewing the hair or using butterfly clips to create texture and interest.

As Kevin points out: “I really want these guys to be inspired and interested in experimenting with styling and different textures. When they are training to be hairdressers, so little time is actually spent learning about styling and creating different looks and it’s really important, not just for the hairdresser but for the consumer also.”

We’ve all been there, trapped between a hairdryer, can of hairspray and pair of ghds, trying to recreate the latest catwalk look and ending up with something as hideously unstable as Amy Winehouse’s beehive at the Brits. As Kevin points out:

“Women are expected to look fabulous all the time and different looks are really difficult to achieve without the know-how. They may always wonder what it might look like to wear their hair in a certain way, but never been able to create it. So it’s important that we train the hairdresser how to do it, so that they can then train the client to achieve it at home.”

Kevin forsees that hair is shaking loose the structured styles that have dominating tresses for so long in favour of much more feminine styles. The looks that he creates for the team at Harper Quinn are all very modern yet girly and organic.

“The hair looks like it’s been live in. It’s not over-producty, just very bedroomy and the definition is frayed and moody.”

Paul Quinn of Harper and Quinn was really keen to introduce the Kevin Murphy Range into his salon with products like Easy Rider and Gritty Business as he feels brands such as Tigi which have dominated the shelves of hairdressers have become dull and lifeless.

Paul says: “The Kevin Murphy Range is a much funkier and contemporary brand which suits our salon. We’ve never really been somewhere that deals with ladies that do lunch and a weekly blowdry. We’re much more suited to a younger clientele. We really want to focus on teaching clients what are the current looks and make them self-sufficient so they can experiment with styles before a night out.”

So step away from the straighteners girlfriend and into the hands of a Harper and Quinn stylist for full-on X appeal.
