Win Tickets to see Stephen Fretwell

Published on January 4th 2006.

By now, everyone must know who Stephen Fretwell is. The Scunthorpe-born singer / songwriter has been slowly and steadily breaking his way into the music world for years, and was finally brought to the attention of, well everyone really, with the release of his much anticipated debut album ‘Magpie’ late in 2004.

I was first turned on to Stephen Fretwell early in 2003, after my curiosity was aroused by the stunning reviews and hype surrounding his classic ep ‘8 songs’. I went along to Night and Day to check him out. Admittedly, by then I was already behind the times, jumping on a bandwagon that had been trundling along steadily for a while and attracting a dedicated following of fans - including many famous faces on the Manchester music scene.

I was blown away by the gig, and even though my positioning right next to a speaker at the side of the stage didn’t really help when it came to recognising his genius lyrics, it was still very easy to spot Stephen Fretwell’s individuality and the simple beauty of his music.

Manchester has been Fretwell’s spiritual home since he moved to Salford with the intention of studying at Salford University. After managing to last a whopping 2 days as a student, he realised that Manchester had a lot to offer an aspiring musician and turned his attention to his music full time. It wasn’t long before the twenty year old set the city’s live music scene buzzing, and at the age of 21 he was voted top live act in the city by City Life readers.

After releasing a few EPs, Fretwell’s critically acclaimed first album ‘Magpie’ finally made its way into the open in November 2004, and perfectly showcases the northern clarity and individuality of his voice, his cutting and poetic lyrics, and the simple beauty of his Dylanesque music.

After a largely sold out tour late last year, Fretwell has announced more live dates for this month and will be playing at the Ritz on the 12th.

We have a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky reader, so if you want to be there, fill out your details below.
