THERE'S a reason why people are still talking about Madchester in Manchester, twenty-odd years after it happened: the music was ace. (Or should we say, top). Influential and ground-breaking, tracks like 'Kinky Afro' and 'Pacific State' still sound fresh today. Our music scene didn't start and end in 1989, but it was undeniably a high point.
The Happy Mondays will be supported by 808 State, Peter Hook and The Light, and The Farm.
If you missed it the first time round, or if you want to relive the messy days of your youth, here's your chance. Some of the best acts of that time are playing live in beautiful Cheshire parkland this August as part of the Junction 16 weekend of music.
Headlining will be The Happy Mondays, in their full original line-up (Bez and Rowetta too). They'll be supported by acid house pioneers 808 State, plus Peter Hook and The Light who'll be playing Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. Legendary Merseyside band The Farm will complete the live music bill. DJ support comes from Clint Boon, Dave Haslam and Herbie Saccani.
The concert will take place at Betley Court Farm, Crewe, just off Junction 16 of the M6. It's a beautiful, historic setting overlooking a 26-acre mere where Charles Darwin once swam.
Friday night (9 August) sees Status Quo supported by Mungo Jerry. Saturday (10 August) features pop acts including Stooshe and Union J. The Happy Mondays and support will be playing on Sunday night (11 August). Tickets for this concert are £35.
