THE subtle art of making a comedy out of a tragedy isn't easy to master. But actor and stand-up Smug Roberts has given it a go – and by all accounts, has made a cracking job of it.
His one-man-show Flip is a life-affirming comedy about death that manages that hat trick of making you think, making you laugh, and (if you're in that kind of mood) making you cry.
Perhaps it's no surprise – the director is Noreen Kershaw whose CV includes episodes of Shameless and Coronation Street which both do bitter-sweet, tragi-comedy to a tee.
Smug himself is best known for his roles in Phoenix Nights, That Peter Kay Thing, and Looking For Eric. He's a compelling, versatile performer – in Flip he moves between joy and sadness with split-second timing.
It's an exhilarating experience for audiences. If you'd like to go, you can buy tickets for £10/£12 – click here.
And make sure you enter the competition for two free tickets to see Flip on Wednesday 30 November 2011 at The Dancehouse Theatre, Oxford Road. To enter, just click the big red button above.
