THE Rail Ale Trail is the clever idea of the folks at the East Lancs Railway. It's a pub crawl on a steam train – you hop on at Bury or any of the stations along the 12 mile route, and hop off at each village along the way to sample some outstanding local ales in characterful pubs and inns.
In this competition, one Confidential reader will win a guided tour for five people on the Rail Ale Trail on Sunday 25 September.
You’ll join the train at Bury then chug along on the train to the hidden-gem village of Summerseat where you’ll sup a pint of beer (or two) in tucked away pubs whilst listening to the guide’s stories of illegal brewing, rebellious landlords who come back from the grave and a mill empire to make Sir Alan Sugar jealous. The prize includes a four hour tour, a return trip on East Lancashire Railway’s steam train and a bottle each of finest ELR ale.
Four hour guided tours like this cost £19.50 per person. You can also do the trail in your own time without a guide – tickets for unlimited travel on the ELR all day cost £12.50 per adult (£8.40 concession). Find out more about the Rail Ale Trail.
