Win Dinner At Aamchi Mumbai

A street food adventure for four at this new opening in Cheadle

Published on December 1st 2014.

Win Dinner At Aamchi Mumbai

AT some restaurants, the food is a backdrop to your conversation. At others, it’s the centre of attention all night. Aamchi Mumbai is one the latter. Eating here for the first time is an adventure of unpredictable flavours and unexplored tastes.

Confidential went recently and was delighted by the chaats with their explode-in-the-mouth puris, wholesome, spiced fillings, and home-made chutneys

It’s different in its focus – which is entirely on the street food and cuisine found in Mumbai. And it’s different in how it cooks. Almost every dish is made individually from scratch, rather than following the usual, more commercial method of cooking standard curry sauces, preserving them with way too much oil, and tweaking each one slightly for each order. (They'll even make a bespoke curry for you at Aamchi Mumbai, if you ask nicely.)

This approach makes a massive impact on the taste; the food at Aamchi Mumbai is fresher, more distinctive, and feels better for you as it’s not as heavy as your average Indian.

Confidential went recently and was delighted by the chaats with their explode-in-the-mouth puris, wholesome, spiced fillings, and homemade chutneys. Other highlights were the tender, charcoal-grilled tandooris, the homemade chilli and onion bread, the Indo-Chinese dishes, and the homemade desserts, such as the sweet carrot pudding with its flavours of toffee and caramel. The homemade desserts, kulfi (Indian ice cream) and gola (a sorbet drink found all over Mumbai) made for a refreshing end to the feast.

With owners from Mumbai, Aamchi Mumbai prides itself on authenticity, and as you’d expect from a genuinely Indian restaurant, it offers plenty of choice for vegetarians.

The décor is warm and vibrant with Bollywood music and eclectic artworks, and the prices are very reasonable. It’s in Cheadle, just a two-minute drive from Kingsway, and is well worth a visit.
