YOU don't need to be smitten and smoochy to enter this competition to win a Valentine's dinner at Michael Caines. The menu looks good enough to seduce even those who have sworn off romance for life.
It's a wine-matched, six-courser in the hotel's swishest dining destination – the acclaimed fine-dining restaurant that sits alongside the champagne and cocktail bar on the lower floor.
The dinner for two starts with lobster tortellini and a glass of MC Blanc de Blanc Champagne, and continues at a similar level of indulgence all the way to the double-pudding finale.
Following the lobster, you'll be served pan-fried duck liver with lemongrass poached rhubarb, honeycomb, and burnt orange puree. This will be accompanied by a glass of Jurançon Molleux 2009.
When you've fully savoured those delights, it's back to seafood for curried baby monkfish tail. This comes with wild mushrooms, baby leeks, mussels and saffron velouté. A glass of Maçon-Fuisse 2010 from Dom Thibert in Burgundy will accompany.
By now you should be thoroughly intoxicated by the food and wine, if not by your dining partner. The final meat course is roasted saddle of Yorkshire venison with chestnut puree, braised gem lettuce, pancetta, roasted figs and red wine sauce. Robust, rich flavours to end the savoury part of this dinner. The wine here will be the South African Glen Carlou 2009.
It's onto the sweets with a passion fruit mousse served with exotic fruit salad and a coconut rice pudding ice cream. Then a second dessert of hot chocolate soufflé with hot chocolate sauce and coffee ice cream. This will be served with the port-like dessert wine Banylus 2008 from Les Clos de Paullies in Languedoc-Rousillion.
