THE first goal of a new writer used to be to get a publisher. Nowadays many skip that step and let readers of e-books decide whether their novel is a future bestseller or not.
It’s a fast-paced thriller and not for the faint-hearted.
Manchester crime writer Phil Martin is one of the new breed – a novelist building a fanbase through e-books sold through Amazon. In this competition to mark the launch of his new website www.philmartinbooks.co.uk, we're giving away a top-of-the-range Kindle Touch 3G worth £169.
His latest thriller is Child Number Three, which he says is “very much in the same genre as Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”
It tells the story of a Mancunian girl’s journey as she attempts to find out her true identity. Amy Walker grew up believing she was orphaned in a coach crash but her research tells her she wasn’t ever on that coach.
Martin says, “She uncovers a stack of lies told by her foster parents and ends up in the shanty towns and palaces of Morocco. More clues lead her back to London and a dark Chechen underworld where she discovers she was on a coded list of stolen-to-order children. It’s a fast-paced thriller and not for the faint-hearted.”
Child Number Three and his other three novels, The Attached, Killing Doves and Stripped Bare are all available for download for £1.32 from Amazon Kindle for most types of smart phone, computer, tablet and, of course, reading devices such as Kindle.
All the novels feature Manchester in some capacity. Phil says, “They all focus on normal Mancunians who have their lives changed by chance encounters with fictional gangs. The Attached and Killing Doves are set entirely in Manchester and Salford.”
