You’ve tried the passion killer patches and burnt Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking but you’re quickly beginning to resign yourself to being a social out cast forever.

We talk to Steve Williams of Manchester Hypnosis on how the power of the mind can free you from nasty nicotine.

1. How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis is a natural form of relaxation. Driving down the road on "autopilot" is a good example of hypnosis in every day life. With hypnotherapy we are simple using your mind’s natural ability. Hypnosis is NOT sleep. At all times you are aware of everything, and in complete control of yourself and your thoughts.

2. For what purposes can hypnosis be used?
Hypnosis has a long history of treating anxiety related disorders (all the things that seem to get worse when you feel stressed), habits such as over eating and smoking, phobias and psychosomatic disorders, symptoms that are not caused by medical dysfunction - things like IBS, chronic fatigue and non-medical conditions like infertility. 3. Can it be effective for anyone?
Everyone has an amazing power for self-healing and self-empowerment. Every normal, mentally healthy adult can use hypnosis.

4. With the imminent smoking ban, how can hypnosis work for smokers?
Different hypnotherapists use different techniques. I’ve found that the best method is to simply make the pleasure from quitting greater that the desire to smoke. It’s a bit like asking "Would you quit if I gave you a million pounds?" Most people would. I simply help people to feel really good about not smoking.

5. How many sessions would it take?
Normally, Just one

6. What is the success rate like to cure smoking?
Many studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in quitting smoking. These studies report a wide range of success from between 66% and 95%. My own smoking cessation session appears to have a 90% success record. I think this is because I only take on clients that I think I really can help.

7. Would you need top up sessions?
Hypnotherapy for smoking cessation normally works in one session. I sometimes advise a single "booster" session in one or two weeks, but I charge a minimal amount for these top-ups.

8. Are there any reasons why hypnosis wouldn’t work for smoking?
Quitting smoking always requires will-power. If you’re committed to stop, hypnosis can really help, but if you don't really want to stop, I don't think anything would work.
