Top 10 Songs Update!

Published on June 10th 2005.

So, somewhere in between Body Confidential seminars, training for and doing the Manchester Run, partying with Rio Ferdinand, finding the best breakfasts in Manchester, watching the Hatton fight, and organising the North West Comedy Awards 2005 (check out the microsite for tickets, they’re going fast! - ), compiling Manchester’s Top 10 Songs of All Time has kind of fallen by the way side.

Click here to find out more about the speaker system you could win.

But, we’re back on the case; after all we can’t keep that top JBL speaker system we promised one lucky winner for the office (can we???). The general delay in compiling the top ten is we promise not down to sheer laziness (although Tim’s chronic inability to do anything other than play on the helicopter game may have something to do with it!) we have simply received such a sheer amount of entries it’s getting difficult to keep track of all the different songs you lot love.

Your favourite songs of all time are very personal and because of this we’ve been receiving some entries which are a bit random to say the least. Noone else in the world (well, at least noone in our office) had even heard of Tristan’s favourite song, ‘Piece in the Old Style 3’ by Henryk Gorecki. When I looked into it, this isn’t even a song but a symphony! Tristan is obviously a damn sight more cultured than any of us give him credit for. And, of course, we’ve had the few ‘everyone’s a comedian’ entries. Daniel Crews, if your 3 favourite songs of all time really are ‘The Birdy Song’, ‘Agadoo’, and ‘Star Trekking’ you really need to get out more, check out our brand new events calendar for some ideas - click here for more.

So, here’s what we’re going to do. Tim has managed to tear himself away from his helicopter for long enough to add up all the votes for the likes of Queen, Bob Dylan, Robbie Williams, Otis Reading, and believe it or not, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and (believe it or not) Toxic by Britney Spears! He’s in the process of compiling thefinal list of the top 10 songs (with Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ worryingly near the top – come on Manchester sort it out) so you've got ONE WEEK LEFT to pick your songs to win that speaker system.

To give you an idea of the leading contenders so far, the top 5 songs breaking away at the moment are:

The Top 5 so far...
1) Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
2) Angels - Robbie Williams
3) Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel
4) Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
5) Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Those top 3 look vaguley familiar to every other top song comilation ever made, so come on Manchester, stop taking inspiration from Channel 4's top 100 lists and tell us what your favourite 3 songs are! The clock is ticking.......
