Is Morrissey the greatest Mancunian performer?

Published on May 26th 2009.

The Vote
No: - 50%

After two excellent shows at the Apollo this weekend we have to ask whether Morrissey should now have a statue cast? Surely he’s, unofficially at least, the greatest musical Manc ever?

Let’s weigh up the pros and cons.

Pros: Morrissey is witty, individual, loud-mouthed, eccentric, a great live entertainer, uncompromising, endlessly fascinating and blessed with longevity (he first got together with Johnny Marr and created The Smiths back in 1982). He’s also – and you’d have to have been on one of the many (and increasing) Smiths tours to witness this - the only Manchester star to cause his fan base to weep tears of love and recognition as they are guided past the gates of Southern Cemetery. The latter were name-checked, of course, on the Queen is Dead album with the song Cemetry (sic) Gates. The Smiths are also the only band in Manchester with their own museum, located in Salford Lads Club in Ordsall.

Cons: Morrissey is a difficult character to say the least. He clearly likes to cause offence with his song lyrics and titles and with what he says. He can be morbid, negative and cynical. In the court case brought and won by The Smiths’ drummer Mike Joyce, Morrissey was described by the judge as ‘devious, truculent and unreliable,’ as he defended against giving Joyce a greater share of Smiths' royalties.

Yet he’s special.

Here’s part of the firmament of Greater Manchester music stars: The Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, Freddie and the Dreamers, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, 10cc, Sweet Sensation, the Bee Gees (sort of), Sad Cafe, The Buzzcocks, The Fall, Joy Division/New Order, Magazine, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, James, The Smiths, Lisa Stansfield, Simply Red, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis, the Verve, Mint Royale, Take That, Doves. We've probably forgotten loads. Morrissey stands out from these because, either with The Smiths or as a solo artist, he is the one true original.

By that measure he must be the greatest Mancunian performer of modern times. Do you agree? Vote on the homepage.

Greatest Mancunian performer, George Best surely?

TrinaMay 26th 2009.

Morrissey, no way. He's an egotistical fool, who is a bore as well and writes boring songs. Surely Mick Hucknall is far better?

jimMay 26th 2009.

He's an utter embarrasment and so are all the people who worship him. Take That and Mick Hucknall are miles better for a start

cassonMay 26th 2009.

trina, step away from the internet cloth ears.

wayneMay 26th 2009.

Morrissey isn't fit to polish the shoes of the pure genius that is Mick Hucknall.

StressfordMay 26th 2009.

Yes he's outspoken and yes he's got an ego and a half but Morrissey's a living legend. Hucknall may well be a pop phenom but to compare the two is laughable. Who would win in a fight though? They're both portly gents nowadays. I for one would pay to see it. The winner gets a life-size bronze to replace that ridiculous oversized bike on the corner of Whitworth St West...

id prefer to watch them both die of starvation whilst being crucified

George Best is Northern Irish, how can he be the best Manc performer?????

AnonymousMay 26th 2009.

Take That and Mick Hucknel? Jim get a life son!

Didn't they declare Bestie a post humus honourary manc?

TrevorMay 26th 2009.

Morrissey is the best

Les Dawson playing the piano...genius.

east lancsMay 26th 2009.

No. Just no, no, no. Contributed a lot, yet still not the greatest. Maybe it's my age? To me the Roses embody "Madchester", are The Smiths/Him representative of an earlier era perhaps? Whichever way, no. Not Morrissey.

robcmarMay 26th 2009.

Graham Nash and/or the Hollies.

MarkyboiMay 26th 2009.

Well said East Lancs. Ian Brown has contributed far more to the Manchester music scene than ever Morrissey did.

JaneMay 26th 2009.

I think Morrissey is a God

Billy DuffyMay 26th 2009.

Cheers for not including me in your list guys. The opening strains of She Sells Sanctuary have been used in countless adverts for family cars. Surely that counts for something?

wigidiwigidiwakMay 26th 2009.

Mick Hucknall??? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha..... Morrissey = legend.

Shane WardMay 26th 2009.

erm, I think you've missed off one very special person from this list. My hit song, That's My Goal was used in countless montages when people who had dead relatives walked in to audition for X Factor. Please revisit the list.

Yonah HigginsMay 26th 2009.

Guys, I think that to omit me and my sisters from this list is farcical!Cleopatra, although we were all born in Birmingham, did a lot for the Manchester music scene. Our debut album, 'Comin Atcha' reached #20 in the UK album charts. We even had our own clothing line. Seriously, who wrote this joke of an article.

Corrine DreweryMay 26th 2009.

Call me picky, but I think to not include my group Swing Out Sister on this list is pretty bad mmmkay?Despite being born in Nottingham in 1959, then growing up in Lincolnshire before moving to London to study fashion, I am proud of my Manc heritage and the fact that wikipedia lists us as a 'band from Manchester - for that reason, I think you should include us in this list so that people can compare us unfavourable to Morrissey. Our hit song, Break Out, was used in quite a few hair conditioner adverts during the late 1990s. What's more, it is CURRENTLY being used in an advert for a company called SoftBank Mobile. The advert features Cameron Diaz for crying out loud!

Andy ConnellMay 26th 2009.

I agree with Corrine.

Ian AstburyMay 26th 2009.

I disagree with Billy Duffy.

Richard LeeseMay 26th 2009.

Morrissey would have voted for the congestion charge.

a.ddntMay 26th 2009.

Morrissey , pah, he's a miserably, reclusive hard to interview f***er. Joy Division/NewOrder or Happy Mondays done more for the Manc: Music SCENE than he has. Although not a Musician- the late Anthony H Wilson will always remain MANCHESTER MUSIC MAN for his vision of unearthing raw, energetic bands.

We don't think Morrissey is all that.

I think Mick Hucknall is cool. I plan to hold this opinion until the Guardian's Music Section tells me what to like next.

Hippy Veggy Dafodil bumMay 26th 2009.

love him

Mike JoyceMay 26th 2009.

I strongly dispute the this article, but wish to express my fondness of Swing Out Sister. Corrine, you go girl! Call me...

TJMay 26th 2009.

Trevor isn't me. I agree with Andy Connell

lentil eating trustafarianMay 26th 2009.

no, Chorlton does not need a Tesco.

shayne ward's mumMay 26th 2009.

you go girl!!

Andy ConnellMay 26th 2009.

agree with TJ.

emma graceMay 26th 2009.

MIKE JOYCE!!! Did you used to teach French at BGS???

TescoMay 26th 2009.

I disagree with Ian Astbury.

RowettaMay 26th 2009.

Make a statue of me

DescartesMay 26th 2009.

lentil eating trustafarian, no to Tesco - that's cool. But what about the proposed Sainsburys? There's not been much opposition to that. (not that people in Chorlton are snobby brand lovers or anything).

TJMay 26th 2009.

I think Corrine supports Utd as well

Star struckMay 26th 2009.

Mike Joyce was just about the best drummer I've seen live. And if this really is him and it really is Corinne, then they should get together and start a new band.

tommeMay 26th 2009.

its got to be ELBOW , head and shoulders above anything to come out of the city . just look at the awards they have received

Steven RossMay 26th 2009.

Ian Brown are you having a laugh? The guy embarrasses Manchester wearing Adidas head to toe at the age of 50 plus he cant sing and his songs about monkeys and dolphins are pathetic

ex BGSMay 26th 2009.

tee hee emma grace, if only it were. he was a legend

lentil eating trustafarianMay 26th 2009.

There's a Sainsbury's opening? I'm outraged and turned on.

red_ Champ_09May 26th 2009.

For me Les Dawson without a doubt, Morrissey!! are you having a laugh!!, at least with Les you knew where you stood the man was a genius - Build a statue NOW we owe it to LES!!

el beanioMay 26th 2009.

The wittiest thread I have ever read on here, I'm thrilled and intimidated! But clearly the memorial and glory needs to go to the Smiths not Morrissey. His solo output while still amusing at times, does not compare musically.

el beanioMay 26th 2009.

P.S. The Stone Roses? I think you had to be there...

LCGMay 26th 2009.

of course he is!

slimMay 26th 2009.

morrissey ! best perfotmer ! no way , wouldnt have him in the house mate !!

Chris BMay 26th 2009.

Sabi Rock is my favourite.. For those that don't know who he is he's the guy with fully mobile guitar and amp, dreadlocks and no apparent motive, direction or message. He just performs! that's it. Hilarious. Should we start taking him seriuosly as a performer? Will Mancon do a piece on him or would this ruin his persona?

Jan DMay 26th 2009.

This rant has totally made my day!!! Scousers have the best sense of humour??!!!! Naaaaahhh!!

MilesMay 26th 2009.

It's Johnny Marr innit!

a.dentMay 26th 2009.

tomme , ELBOW are actually from BURY. but HELL yeah go along with you . How can this article be taken seriously when the MISERY MORRISSEY has cancelled yet 2 more gigs !!!!!!

antMay 26th 2009.

bit harsh to say NO - the city should be ashamed of him... if he's ill he's ill... i'm sure many people don't go to work on worse excuses. There should also be another vote - 'don't care... ' i know i'd tick that one.

OEDMay 26th 2009.

Ant, it's a poll; it's meant to be polemic :o)

BoredofitallMay 26th 2009.

I like his hair.

JinkiesMay 27th 2009.

His head hair, or, other hair?

boredofitallMay 27th 2009.

His leg hair.

Wrist Slashers Support GroupMay 27th 2009.

The Doc who keeps telling Morrisey to cancel his gigs deserves a medal.

cigpapersMay 27th 2009.

Morrisey is the best and should join The BNP!

proudmanc-essMay 27th 2009.

still sexy at 50 !! i would...dont know if he would....;-)

RealisticMay 27th 2009.

No! He's a mardy tw*t and okay musically he is good but he's not the best! As a Manc with links to the Music Industry, I've been told by several good sources just how rude and arrogant he is!

AnonymousMay 27th 2009.

I suppose it would be a good thing to have a statue devoted to the saint of miserable, miserly moaners in Manchester. We must not marginalise them but include them in our cohesive citizenship so we can throw rotten eggs and tomatoes in the name of fun.
