Stars Support Beer Mat Campaign

Published on November 9th 2005.

In an attempt to compete with the Qpod for longest running competition on ManchesterConfidential.com, the ‘Design Your Own Beer Mat’ competition is hotting up, with local celebrities raising the bar when it comes to the standard of the entries.

Despair was in the air after recent efforts by locals failed to cut the mustard and with attempts to hand out the blank beermats to booze monsters at the Comedy Store during the Manchester Comedy Festival, and then at the North West Comedy Awards itself, leading to an increased amount of entries, the efforts resembled those of good willed, but booze sizzled, Mancunians. We’ve seen a host of the entries from the Comedy Awards night and believe me, they’re not pretty.

Celebrities to the rescue then. Comedian Dave Spikey conjured up a decent attempt, while Noel Edmonds produced the little number that’s pictured after driving one of his Qpods around to winner Elaine Birch’s house in Stockport. Noel has obviously been reading ManchesterConfidential’s report on Santa returning to the Town Hall rooftop.

Noel says: “I was booked to switch on Manchester’s Christmas lights. The idea was that a stuntman dressed like Santa would abseil down the front of the town hall onto the podium.

He would drop down behind the screen and I would jump up – the gag being I had abseiled myself. It was a great idea until he got stuck halfway down, his beard got trapped in the ropes! I was crawling around on my hands and knees for twenty minutes not knowing what to do. It was a nightmare at the time but looking back it was hilarious!”

The panel of judges will now select the best 12 labels to date to be turned into a 2006 calendar with all proceeds going to Nordoff-Robbins. One winning entry will also be turned into a commemorative ale to be sold in JW Lees pubs, with the winner also winning their own weight in beer, and a gala event next spring will host an exhibition and an auction of all the celebrity labels.

Other entrants include DJ Mark Radcliffe, TV weatherman Fred Talbot and Samia Smith from Corrie who looks like she’s had a night in for once!
