Schindler

Katrina Taylor finds Stockport's finest might just be the best in the region

Published on July 4th 2007.

Schindler

Where is it:
Schindler
Sport & Street Retail Ltd
6 Little Underbank
Stockport
SK1 1JT
www.schindler-shop.com

The History:
Schindler has been going for seven years as an independent retailer, originally with a store in Heaton Moor. It moved to Stockport town centre two years ago. The store is manned by brothers Josef and Kurt Schindler. Josef does the brand sourcing and buying, while Kurt holds the fort and banters with the customers.

Who shops there:
Men or boys – this is a guys-only store. Still, the ladies would be more than happy with a boyfriend decked out head to toe in this gear. The typical Schindler customer is between 16-45 years old and is seriously cool without the try-too-hard factor. David Beckham-type pretty boys best stay in Topman.

What’s it sell:
Josef sources their stock from all over the world, especially America. Specialising in urban casuals, they stock Nike, Stussy, Carhartt, YMC, Lyle & Scott Vintage, Adidas Originals and tons more, the likes of which you just can’t get anywhere else. In other words it’s a very individual shop with real flair. This place not only carries men’s togs but accessories and artwork - they’ve even got a BMX in there.

Why go:
As well as a fabulous range of clothes and accessories Schindler are second to none in the customer care stakes. You can sign-up for their newsletters, which will alert you to any up-and-coming promotions or new stock. Join the Breakfast Club and go for a bacon butty and brew there first thing, or the Supper Club where you’ll be treated to a hotpot and beer in the evening. They get local DJs on the decks, old classics on the DVD player, and you can challenge your mates to table football. You can also get loyalty cards, home delivery, and they’ll even stay open late for you. The list is long.

The future:
The plan is to spread the love to other locations across the North West. They want to keep doing more of the same, providing quality kit to mankind and surprising the customers with what they offer.

The verdict:
I walked in stressed and came out grinning, I don’t know any other shop that’s done that – and this writer’s a girl. Put simply, Schindler is a really wonderful shopping experience.
