M People Competition

Published on September 14th 2005.

M People were formed in 1990 by Mike Pickering: they were literally, Mike’s People. A one-time fish factory worker, our Mike became a globally renowned DJ at legendary Manchester nightspot the Hacienda ("the Godfather of UK House" they called him), booked several early shows by The Smiths, and signed James and the Happy Mondays whilst working as Factory Records’ A&R man. Quite the track record.

Londoner Paul Heard (bass, keyboards) and erstwhile plumber Andrew Lovell alias Shovell (percussion) completed the instrumental wing of the band. And then there was vocalist Heather Small. Immersed in black music as she grew up on a West London council estate, she took the raw emotion of Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and channelled it into her highly distinctive, soul-baring performances with M People. She has since recorded a solo album, Proud, the title song of which represented the official 2012 Olympic bid, subsequently achieving anthemic status.

After more than a decade of commercial success and critical acclaim, timeless tracks such as Moving On Up, Search For The Hero and One Night In Heaven, it's probably safe to say that M People are one of the most successful soul-dance bands this country has ever produced.

Beginning their chart domination in 1991, the band soon became a permanent fixture at the top of the charts, and with 20 Top 40 single chart entries, more than 11 million sales worldwide, a BRIT Award for Best UK Dance Act and a Mercury Music Prize to boot (beating the likes of The Prodigy, Paul Weller and Britpop faves Blur and Pulp), it's hard to think of another act in the same commercial ballpark. Not bad for a group who emerged out of northern England's underground club culture.

Following the release of the band’s Ultimate Collection album this February, M People have announced their first UK live shows for over 6 years. They’ll be appearing at Manchester Arena on Saturday 8th October, and tickets are available 24hours from 0871 2200 260, or on-line at www.gigsandtours.com priced £35 plus booking fee.

However, we've got five pairs of tickets to give away. All you have to do is enter your details below and we'll pick a winner out at random.
