Go to the King Cotton opening night – for free

Jimmy McGovern's first stage work in decades received a standing ovation when it opened at the weekend. Be among the first to see it in Liverpool, in today's competition

Go to the King Cotton opening night – for free

The eagerly awaited King Cotton is on it's way to Liverpool. The show, from one of the city's best known playwrights, Jimmy McGovern, opened to glowing reviews and is currently enjoying an ecstatic audience reception at Salford's Lowry.

King Cotton is an epic story, steeped in history and set to an emotional score performed by a 21-piece brass band.

Tom an impoverished mill worker and Sokoto, a black slave from an American cotton plantation, are both searching for their own freedom, but neither imagines that this journey will bring them together with such devastating consequences.

King Cotton is written in conjunction with Ian Brownbill who drew inspiration from conversations with his friend Laurence Westgaph. It is directed by Liverpool's Jude Kelly and stars John Henshaw from Early Doors and Grow Your Own.

The cast, crew and musicians are said to be overjoyed with the reaction to the show and are greatly looking forward to their imminent visit to the Empire next week. The show runs from Tue 25-Sat 29 September.

Commissioned to mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade, King Cotton is one of the highlights of Liverpool’s 800th birthday calendar and is part of the city’s Year of Heritage.
