Design a Beer Bottle Label and Win Your Weight in Beer

Published on August 24th 2005.

The pub. The cornerstone of British society. There’s no better place to relax after a tough day in the office or to sink a few at the weekend.

Now that 24 hour drinking is round the corner, there is more time to savour this fine British institution and all things that reside inside the traditional British pub: the wide range of bitters and ales on offer, wooden seats, accessories on the wall, a little old man with his own seat at the bar asking for a refill in his age-old tankard, dartboard, pool table, juke box, buxom barmaids, and, of course, beer bottles and their labels scattered around all over the place.

Popular traditional brewer types JW Lees - with Manchester Confidential as media partners - are now offering Mancunian pub goers, or non pub goers, the chance to design their own, Manchester inspired beer bottle label. And not only do you get to have your concept produced in JW Lees pubs, you can win your own weight in beer. Gordo’s just fallen off his chair, and has sectioned off a room in his flat to put it all in.

The initiative is being launched to help support the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity.

Early entries have included the Manchester skyline, Old Trafford stadium and the two god awful efforts that you can see on this page from me and our MD Andy Mullett - so as you can probably gather, you don't need to be a professional designer to have a go.

The winning artwork in the 'Born in the Heart of Manchester campaign will then be displayed in the heart of the city – the creative Northern Quarter – as part of a gala event where the celebrity artworks will be auctioned to the highest bidder with all proceeds going to the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity. Members of the public are also invited to enter Born In The Heart of Manchester – the winning three finalists will also be displayed at the auction with the top 12 labels turned into JW Lees’ 2006 calendar.

Just as importantly, every week for the first few weeks of the competition, one lucky designer will win their weight in beer.

In addition, JW Lees will be producing a special limited edition brew bearing the final winning entry. This will be sold across all JW Lees pubs with 10p from every sale going to the appeal.

Here's a drinking game to keep you going….

  • Balance a beer mat on a table, and make sure that half of it hangs over the edge of the surface.
  • Hit it with with the back of your fingers from below (this can hurt your nails if you strike it particularly hard).
  • Try to catch the beer mat without turning your hand over.
  • Repeat until bored…

All you need to do is register your details below to gain access to the beer bottle design page. Just download the beer bottle label and get drawing, it’s the concept they’re after rather than any outstanding designs (as you see from my effort, which is more XXXX standard than a stella performance).

Just come up with something about Manchester that interests you, or a Manchester themed idea, and you can use anything you want to draw your design, pencils, pens, felt tips, charcoal, anything you like. You could even take a photograph or make a collage if you want to. Then just post it back to us at the address below.

Good Luck!

Tim Gough
