Deals of the Year 2005

Published on August 25th 2005.

The 'Deals of the Year' awards is an event coming up on the 28th September and is the brainchild of Kevin Spencer, Business Development Director for Excel Publishing, publishers of the ever popular en Magazine.

The magazine for business types and high fliers set about on a mission to bring the swankiest, money waving, back slapping dinner event to the laps of Manchester's money waving, swanky business community five years ago.

Based on the fact that most business dinners consist of eating, copious amounts of drinking and waffling on about a latest business venture that the bloke next to you really doesn’t want to hear, en decided to host their own and get a smile back on the faces of those money makers. They’ve continued with the eating and copious amounts of drinking theme, but have upped the ante every year for the last five to bring an awards dinner for current and budding entrepreneurs that is – whisper it – a bit more fun.

The venue changes every year, with this year’s event at the Bridgewater Hall and the numbers keep swelling. Last year’s event was attended by 850 people, , and they’re squeezing a few more in this time around with 1500 people turning up, making it the biggest sit down dinner event outside of London. The event sold out within a week of tickets going on sale, with attendees made up of en readers and professional people.

So what makes it more interesting than the others? Well, reputation goes along way, and en’s reputation has pulled in speakers such as Alchemy’s Jon Moulton and Sir Tom Farmer from Kwikfit.

This year’s top attraction is a Q and A session with Amstrad big wig Sir Alan Sugar, hosted by Mike Toolan. Sir Alan is fresh from scouring through young entrepreneurial talent on his ‘The Apprentice’ show. You’d have thought he’d have had enough of young upstarts, but he jumped at the chance to come up to Manchester and take part in the Awards.

Entertainment comes in the form of John Bishop performing a comedy set and a live band (it’s a biggie but we can’t tell you who it is yet).

Twelve awards are handed out, with five of them specifically for entrepreneurs. Sir Alan will be handing out the ‘Deal Maker of the Year’ award. 400 of the people attending are under 25 and they’ll be sitting in the same space as professionals, established businessmen and public sector leaders.

The full list of categories are as follows:

  • Best Technology Deal
