Davina McCall reportedly burst into tears when it was announced that this year's Big Brother- both celebrity and mere mortal - would be the last. And no wonder. Her annual presenting stint has spared her from the TV presenter reject bin, which - as Melanie Sykes will attest - leaves fallen stars with no choice but to bare their face and soul on Churchill Insurance adverts.
The BB axe could even mean that we see Davina herself as a contestant on a reality show in a bid to raise her profile and bank balance. This would be lovely if the first lady of bland could find herself humiliated in a painful way - but unfortunately Davina hasn't yet found herself on the other side of the fence.
Anyway this year's line-up of the young and the restless, the Z-list and the listless, is as follows: Vinnie Jones is the biggest claim to fame and he's amongst the company of two of Jordan's exes, Dane Bowers and Alex Reid, Alec Baldwin's lesser known brother - Stephen, Ronnie Wood's ex-girlfriend, music people Lady Sovereign, Basshunter and Sisqo plus some page three girl. Oh and Heidi Fleiss. Who? Don't worry, we don't know either.
The TV gods say the general public has finally lost interest in sitting in the living room watching other people sitting in the living room. Kicking off the show this year, the celebrity version of BB has yet to win over TV critics, one of whom described the opening show as 'the last gasp of a dying genre'. It would appear that far from going out with a bang, Celebrity BB will sadly fade out to the faint and ironic murmur of Dane Bowers' biggest hit 'Out of your mind'. Now how did that one go.
But contrary to the critics, Celebrity Big Brother was in fact last night's second most popular programme pulling in almost 6.7 million viewers, according to Channel 4. It may be a little optimistic then for us to believe this really is the end, after all there are still other reality shows which appear to be going strong; I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, The Apprentice and Come Dine With Me, to name a few.
We could see BB switch channels or come back under the guise of a different name with Davina McCall...in a disguise...God forbid.
But if Channel 4 really are doing the right thing, striking whilst the iron's hot - or luke warmish in this case - and burying the first beast of reality TV, will you be sad to see it go? Maybe just a little bit?

Reality?????? ..BB and CBB are totally beyond parody by the even the best comic writers, but it made enough money for C4 to do more interesting things and provided the Star with a ready made silly season Front Page, a partnership made in purgatory.

Alex Reid isn't a Jordan ex - they're back together.
How dare you say 'who?' to Heidi Fleiss. The woman's a saint. She's already come out with the best quote yet, 'thank god for abortion'. I love her.
wings should be in the list !RJ.
Will be glad to see the back of this.Moronic T. V. for the mindless, brain dead masses!!
