On a recent trip to the Imperial War Museum North, some rather remarkable-looking puppets caught our eye. Life-sized and highly evocative, these WW1 soldiers looked like they had an interesting story to tell.
We sent a quick email to the museum asking for more information – and they very nicely offered to give one of our readers a family ticket to see the puppets in action. They're from A November Day – a play which will be shown on Saturday 8 November and Tuesday 11 November to mark the ninetieth anniversary of Armistice.
It tells the tale of one veteran's memories of the conflict and his unexpected encounter with a stray dog who knew no boundaries. Using live music, puppets and masks, A November Day explores the miracle of friendship when all else seems lost.
The play is one of many events at the museum that mark the end of the first world war. Highlights include performances from characters in their Horrible Histories exhibition: Frightful First World War, plus tours for all ages over Remembrance weekend, and discussions for adults on subjects including the war poets and the territorial army. Check out their website for details.
