United rape allegation and bye-bye markets: Tuesday 18 December

City news in 250 words

Published on December 19th 2007.

MANCHESTER UNITED are involved in a scandal. A nineteen year old player – not in the senior team – has been arrested on suspicion of rape. This follows Monday's club Christmas party which finished up at the Great John Street Hotel, close to Granada Studios, in the city centre. A 26 year old woman made the allegation following the late night revelry.

THE POPULAR CHRISTMAS MARKETS are due to close before the biggest weekend of the shopping year. In a peculiar decision, the city council, say they need the extra time to clean up and that it’s ‘a major operation’. Other British cities, such as Birmingham and Nottingham, seem capable of carrying out adequate cleaning until Christmas Day. Several traders on the markets have expressed a desire to prolong their stay until Monday.

CRAIN’S Manchester Business, launched on Monday and is now for sale in city centre newsagents. As the press release says it will also ‘land on the desks of 15,000 tightly qualified professionals’. Tightly qualified being about right at this time of year. The 32 page first issue headlines with falling city centre apartment prices. The magazine will be weekly from 4 February.

MANCHESTER CITY have lost at home for the first time this season. In an entertaining Carling Cup semi-final, the Blues lost 2-0, despite their opponents Tottenham Hotspur having a player, Zokora, sent off as early as the twentieth minute. The visiting Spurs goalkeeper, Paul Robinson made a splendid save to deny Darius Vassell in the second half.

Here's a thought - why don't they make the rapist clean up after the Christmas market. Seen as being a football player he will probably not get sent down for the rape.

Alleged rapist, actually.I'm sure the British justice system goes along the route of innocent until proven guilty.
