News of the day in so many words....07/07/09: Crane smash, cabbies' solidarity for Shields and everybody out in Huyton flood

Published on July 7th 2009.

THE driver of the 100ft crane which collapsed on an apartment block in Liverpool city centre yesterday remains in a critical condition. Its five-tonne counterweight smashed through six occupied floors and into the sub-basement of Chandlers Wharf, in Tabley Street.

Occupants had to be lifted out through the roof. Merseyside has seen at least 11 other high-profile crane accidents since 2006.

UP to 100 homes and businesses in parts of Huyton and Prescot were flooded when a United Utilities contractor damaged a water pipe on Monday. Many people have spent the night away from their homes, with the stench being described as “unbearable”.

Engineers have worked through the night to repair the pipe; United Utilities said they “sincerely apologise” and are now carrying out an investigation.

MORE than 100 taxi drivers drove past Michael Shields’ home in a show of support for the jailed Liverpool FC fan. The 22-year-old’s father, Michael, senior, watched alongside wife Maria and other family members outside their Edge Hill home as the black cabs drove past at 12pm yesterday.

Home Secretary Jack Straw last week refused to pardon Shields, with his legal team now preparing for his last appeal, which must be ready by August 3.

A WORKER at a Barclays’ call centre in Liverpool has been sent home with suspected swine flu. Health chiefs say the incident is being dealt according to ‘standard practice’ but some members of staff at the site on Wavertree Technology Park have said more precautions need to be taken.
