JACK STRAW has announced a new 600 place prison for Liverpool yesterday – as the Government officially dumped the controversial giant "Titan" jail on the Omega business park at Warrington.
It would be a privately-run prison at Maghull, near Ashworth hospital and next door to 350-place HMP Kennet, which opened little more than a year ago. The Ministry of Justice already has planning permission for the site, which will add to the city region's Altcourse and Walton Prisons.
Simms stays put
BILLINGE pub landlord Ian Simms, who was one of the first people in the country to be jailed without a body being found ,has had his parole denied.
Simms was given a life sentence in 1989 for the murder of 22-year–old Helen McCourt, who disappeared on her way home from work in Liverpool. He was convicted on overwhelming DNA evidence.
Palace raid
IMMIGRATION officials raided the Caesar's Palace restaurant on Renshaw Street, and arrested three suspected
illegal workers after spot-checking staff’s papers.
The men, an Iranian, an Iraqi and a Nigerian are now on bail pending further inquiries.Caesar's Palace has got 28 days to provide evidence that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.
Don't panic
PEOPLE in Merseyside have been told not to panic about global outbreaks of swine flu.The Health Protection Agency said travellers returning from affected countries should be aware of symptoms, but do not need to worry.
So far the nearest suspected case is in Sale, Greater Manchester, where an overseas visitor was being tested.
