The nifty 250

News of the day in so many words. Weds, July 8....

Published on July 8th 2009.

AN 800-tonne crane from London and a 500- tonne crane from Leyland were on their way to Liverpool yesterday to help remove the collapsed crane from the top of Chandler's Wharf.

Once removed, search and rescue teams will scour the rubble beneath the crushed buildings to double-check no one is trapped.

It is expected to be weeks before the 106 residents can return home.

PLANS for a community centre in memory of Rhys Jones are to go on show. Commissioned by the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund, the proposed centre will be built in Croxteth and will include a number of facilities. The plans will go on display at Emmaus School next week.

THE Beatles Story museum at the Albert Dock has put up a £100 reward – to be donated to charity – for the return of a frieze above the public entrance which it says has been stolen. Although police suspect the theft to be the work of pranksters, it is still being treated as a serious crime with the museum “upset and angry someone would perform such a selfish act”.

OVERSIZED penguins unveiled on Monday will be up for “adoption” before they reach the streets and parks of Liverpool. Businesses, schools, artists and community groups will have the chance to adopt the Wild in Art’s blue 3ft and 5ft tall penguins and give them a unique design, which will then go on display in November.
