The day's news in so many words: Bradley under mounting pressure over Hurst and other bits

Published on June 26th 2009.

LIVERPOOL Council leader Warren Bradley is facing a rebellion from within his own Lib Dem ranks over his continued support of convicted councillor Steve Hurst.

Members are allegedly worried that rules preventing people convicted under the Representation of the People Act could be compromised to let Cllr Hurst stand again in the forthcoming elections.

Some Lib Dems have said they would rather abstain than risk losing their controversial one-seat majority over Labour in Liverpool next year.

Wavertree Cllr Hurst, a fireman, was last year convicted of breaking election law after distributing leaflets smearing a Labour rival.

The judge said at the end of an appeal that Hurst had been responsible for “dirty tactics of the worst kind”, but Bradley has stuck by him throughout, to the dismay of some members.

A KIRKDALE man was set on fire as he slept on a grass verge in the sunshine. Witnesses have said they spotted three youths running away from the embankment at the junction of Stanley Road and Commercial Road, and then noticed the man’s clothes were alight. The attack, described by police as “callous”.

LIVERPOOL FC supporters will receive an email from RBS justifying their continued support of Tom Hicks and George Gillett. The move comes after the bank has been inundated with emails from fans calling on them to pull the plug on the £350m debt; RBS believing the co-owners are “able to comfortably service their debt obligations” to the bank.

What sort of mentality would allow a city council leader to keep his fireman mate in a political job after he had broken the law in one of the nastiest underhand ways possible?

What sort of mentality would make liverpool kids set a man on fire? This is surely attempted murder on the same scale as the Bulger killing some years ago?If the man had been a toddler the police would be out in force trying to apprehend the psychopaths who did this terrible thing.
