A DRIVERLESS RUNAWAY train derailed after rolling out of its depot at the Walton Junction. The Mersey Rail operated train had been powered-down and was in stationary before the incident yesterday morning, with no passengers being on board. Mersey Rail said an investigation would now begin “because a train should not move of its own accord”, the incident leading to all services on the Kirkby line being suspended.
A 17-YEAR OLD BOY has been arrested on suspicion of setting 10 public houses on fire across Merseyside. Police said the teenager was arrested at his home in Huyton yesterday in connection with the arson attacks at the pubs in West Derby, Edge Hill, Huyton and the Wirral. Although nobody was injured, people were evacuated with 30 firefighters tackling one of the blazes.
PREMATURE DEATHS from cancer are most likely to affect people from Liverpool than anywhere else in England. The city’s local health profile for 2009 showed 164 under-75s per 100,000 die from cancer – compared to a national average of 116. The Director of Public Health for Liverpool PCT said the there is no easy solution although “it is not all doom and gloom – things are improving but people need to listen to health messages about diet, alcohol and exercise.”
BUILDERS have unearthed 20 WWII live grenades near a school in Kirkby. Police arrived with a team of Army bomb disposal experts who then carried out controlled explosions in a skip at the Balfour Beatty site, with residents looking on in amazement.
