Friday July 10: New tourism guru, Shields debate and more

Published on July 10th 2009.

Liverpool council will appoint a new tourism ‘guru’ amid fears enough is not being done to promote the city. The Merseyside Partnership will seek to find out if the new post of Destination Liverpool director would duplicate the work they do. City council leaders have said the new £75,000-a-year role would be a “pragmatic” compromise without “stepping on their (TMP) toes”.

Michael Shields’ rejected pardon will be debated in the House of Commons. Last week Justice Secretary Jack Straw announced a provisional decision not to pardon the 22-year-old, who maintains his innocence. Liverpool Riverside MP, Louise Ellman, has secured an adjournment debate on 16 July and is working with the Shields’ legal team to challenge Mr Straw's ruling.

A woman has fought off a man who tried to rape her. The victim was unloading her car Blackthorne Road, near to Walton Hall Park, at lunchtime on Wednesday when she was targeted by the attacker. The 37-year-old woman was assaulted on the floor before bravely fighting the man off. The suspect is described as being white, in his 40s, about 6ft 2in tall, slim with shaven mousey hair and facial stubble.

A civil servant has been sacked for criticising Salford MP Hazel Blears. Lisa Greenwood, 38, from Widnes, sent an email from her work computer to Ms Blears's website saying MPs had "swindled taxpayers". The email contained her work address at the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), which led to Ms Greenwood dismissed from her administration post.
